BROOKLYN — Today, the New York Philharmonic launches its new website, NYPhil.org.
Conceived and created by Brooklyn-based interactive agency HUGE, the innovative and elegant site combines a wealth of information with state-of-the-art navigation and educational tools. With a fresh and lively new look, each component, from the dramatic multimedia presentations to the updated and more interactive event pages, encourages the user to watch, listen and connect with the music and the New York Philharmonic.
A new logo and visual identity, designed by Paula Scher at Pentagram, acknowledges the orchestra’s long heritage of distinguished conductors and takes its inspiration through the graphic line of the baton, a classic symbol. Representing motion through a circling spiral, the new logo reflects the evolution of the brand and organization.
The website reskin coincides with Alan Gilbert’s inaugural season as the New York Philharmonic’s Music Director. He is the first native New Yorker to hold this post. HUGE’s take on the reskin honors the notion of tradition while engaging patrons with multimedia and social networking opportunities to put forth a fresh and dynamic new brand.
“Alan Gilbert is one of the most ingenious and effective music directors today when it comes to bringing music to the general public,” says Aaron Shapiro, Partner at HUGE. “Our reskin of the website echoes his lead and expands on it. It’s a young, vibrant and moving look that really ties in with the institution’s vision for the future.”
Eric Latzky, Vice President of Communications, New York Philharmonic says, “Increasingly, our world is looking to the web for the information it needs, so having a visually engaging and informative web presence is something that both services our existing patrons and also helps to attract new audiences.”
About New York Philharmonic:
Founded in 1842, the New York Philharmonic is the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States and one of the oldest in the world. Since its inception, it has played a leading role in American musical life, championing and commissioning the music of its time. The Orchestra is also renowned around the globe, having appeared in 425 cities in 59 countries on five continents, including the February 2008 historic visit to Pyongyang, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The Philharmonic’s concerts are broadcast on the weekly syndicated radio program, The New York Philharmonic This Week, streamed on the Orchestra’s Website, nyphil.org, and carried on Sirius XM Radio; the concerts are also telecast annually on Live From Lincoln Center on public television in the U.S. The Philharmonic has made nearly 2,000 recordings since 1917 — with more than 500 currently available — and in 2006 became the first major American orchestra to offer downloadable concerts, recorded live and available on iTunes. The Orchestra has built on the long-running Young People’s Concerts® to develop a wide range of programs, including the School Partnership Program, which enriches music education in New York City, and Learning Overtures, which fosters international exchange through classroom demonstrations and symposia. Alan Gilbert will become Music Director in September 2009, succeeding Lorin Maazel in a distinguished line of 20th-century musical giants. Credit Suisse is the New York Philharmonic’s exclusive Global Sponsor.
