January 15, 2013. Brooklyn. OkCupid today announced the launch of Crazy Blind Date, a new mobile application designed to make more dates happen easily, for more people. The app was created in partnership with Huge, a digital design agency headquartered in Brooklyn, NY.
Available on iOS and Android, Crazy Blind Date was designed to streamline the logistical coordination that often prevents dates from happening quickly, leading to online daters becoming distracted and losing interest. The app allows any user to get a date on demand by simply deciding when and where they would like the meeting to take place.
Crazy Blind Date will then find a suitable match for the user and confirm the date with both participants. An hour before the date, Crazy Blind Date will open an IM window on each user’s phone to help the daters locate each other. After the date, the app will also enable users to provide feedback on their partners. Users accumulate “Kudos” from their dates based on positive feedback, which incentivizes good behavior and allows “good daters” to get more dates.
CrazyBlindDate is free to download. Users can sign up for the app with their OkCupid accounts or can choose to create a new Crazy Blind Date account with just their first name, birthdate, gender and the gender they are interested in dating. Dates can be set up with as little as a few hours’ notice and are matched based on data processed by OkCupid’s proprietary algorithm.
“For a whole generation of young singles, Crazy Blind Date is going to be a great adventure, and a great complement to traditional online dating,” said Sam Yagan, Co-Founder of OkCupid.
Gene Liebel, Partner and Chief Strategy Officer at Huge, said, “It was an honor to have OkCupid ask us to help them tackle some of the problems inherent in online dating. We designed the application to help eliminate the work and frustration involved in coordinating a date and to do so we looked closely at the habits and workflow of today’s daters, particularly the all-important female daters who we know will drive the success of this product.” Liebel added, “I’m deeply proud of our mobile engineering team, who developed the service and got the application into the app store in a very short time.”
To celebrate the launch of Crazy Blind Date, OkCupid has named today “Love Is Blind Day” and temporarily removed all profile photos from OkCupid.com, to encourage users to make dating decisions that are not based on looks. Crazy Blind Date will encourage users to share their stories about using the app on Twitter, using the hashtag #crazyblinddate.
